Ninth Step Murders

93

In a near-future Tokyo, a Japanese investigator and US peacekeeper reluctantly join forces to solve a series of bizarre murders.  Season 2 out now! It's 2033 and Tokyo, partially occupied by China, is in a state of fear, distrust, and drone-enforced surveillance. When Detective Miyako Koreda is paired with Lieutenant Emma Higashi of the US Peacekeeping force, Miyako is annoyed by the obviously American-backed PR stunt. But as the city is ailed by a rise in gruesome crimes, Miyako and her new partner must quickly learn to trust each other as they race against the clock to investigate each case —which range from a missing shipment of dangerous weapons to a faceless body on the subway platform — all while dealing with frequent blackouts, local gangs, and underground resistance forces.Ninth Step Murders is a Realm production, written by Malka Older, Curtis C. Chen, Jacqueline Koyanagi, and Fran Wilde. Listen Away. For more shows like this, visit Realm.fm

    Absolutely obsessed
Listening to this after listening to season 1 on Adrenaline from Realm has filled my life with joy. Epic storytelling, voice acting, and sound design. I wish there was a season 3!!

    Very interesting premise, but…
the execution falls flat for me. Idk what it is, but I keep falling asleep on it. I’m going to keep trying to listen a little while longer to hopefully get into it because I do think it has potential and I want to like it. Will report back.

Epic storytelling, cyberpunk is the best!!
This show is amazing. The story, the characters, and voice acting are great. I was hooked on the first episode. I am super stoked for a third season. Give it a listen, you won’t regret it. When will the third season come out?

A rare miss due to the voice acting
Emily Woo Zeller’s voice acting is so over the top it takes me out of the story every time. Everyone sounds like a Jessica rabbit style cartoon caricature of a real human being. And don’t get me started on how she voices men. Ugh. I’m sad to leave this review because i love Realm, Malka Older, and all of their other programming. And to be clear, I’m not even dinging the content here. It was just an excruciating listen.

    Files
File compression skips on most episodes and many ads. Stories are interesting with good narration and sound fx. Real politics thrown at the entry of one episode.

Great podcast. One of the best
Absolutely brilliant! Great story telling and world building and voice work. Although the characters Japanese names a very hard for me to keep track of. I sometimes find myself having to use context clues to figure out who she is talking about. That’s literally the only downside to this show

    Really Great Story
I normally don’t write reviews, but this was/is a great story. Listened to both seasons in about 4 days. There has to be a season 3. Keep it going!! Both narrator and plot are fantastic!

    Too much Narration
I think this would be a great story but I can’t get pass the constant narration. I’m sure it’s just me but the actors voices do a great job. We don’t need narration every 5 - 10 seconds. The narrator should set up a scene and let the actors act it out. They actors are great so why not let them act. Again, it may just be me and by personal preference but after 2 hours / episodes, I gave up. I lost focus of the story line because it was continually interrupted by the narrator telling us every time a character took a breath or shrugged their shoulder, etc. this appears to be an AWESOME story if you don’t mind those interruptions. Hate that I won’t be able to see how it ends 😒

    Really god but….
Over all I really like this story but it seems like the upload to apple podcasts may not have been so great. I switched to Spotify and it stopped skipping chunks of time here and there. Also, I’m on episode 3 and the character Emma seems bizarrely aggressive compared to the previous two episodes. Maybe it’s just because the first two writers were female and the third is male? Or maybe he just wanted to change things up. Either way it’s a bit jarring compared to before.

    Very enjoyable
I love the storyline and the characters. Interesting setting as well. I like the voice actor. She does a good job distinguishing characters. I also like that each episode wraps up that mystery. You aren’t left hanging.

    Fun near-future scifi
The two main characters have a great odd-couple/buddy-cop vibe. I also like that one of them is queer! The cyberpunk Tokyo setting is cool too.

    Cyberpunk Tokyo Detectives
I cannot get enough of this. Hits the spot for crime drama, cyberpunk/futuristic Tokyo and strong female leads. More seasons please!!
